Dopey Challenge

Dopey Challenge is now official

Today runDisney officially opened up registration for the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. About a week ago some limited pre-sales opened for the Runner’s World Challenge, Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa Card holders. Spots were limited and it seemed were snapped up very quickly due to the excitement of the new events in 2014, the Minnie 10K and Dopey Challenge.

I personally registered to run last Friday by signing up again to run with Team Up to raise funds and awareness for Autism Speaks. I ran the Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge with them last year raising just over $3,400 of which I am very proud. I will admit that the expectations of my donors were on my mind during the Marathon when I was beginning to feel uncomfortable and as much as I was proud of myself for achieving the Goofy I was relieved that I hadn’t let everyone down. Of course I said to myself I would never do something so crazy again. Umm….

So there are a few changes that runDisney implemented this year which can be seen here.

The big takeaways from this are that in addition to the new races, they have made changes to the numbers of entrants so that the courses can move more efficiently. They have trimmed back numbers for the Half Marathon (traditionally the most crowded) and runners now have to submit proof of time to get a corral assignment. There will be more corrals at the start so they can spread the runners out according to ability which should ease congestion on the course. Will this work? We will see when we hit ‘Cone Alley’ after leaving the Magic Kingdom.

The other news is that they are keeping the Marathon Course the same as in 2013 which took us through the Walt Disney World Speedway and also through the ESPN Wide World of Sports. I ran the Marathon course in 2012 and 2013 and had a few thoughts on this.

In 2012 we started with a loop through EPCOT on our way to the Magic Kingdom and the park still had the holiday decorations lit which was nice. As this pushed the mileage reached at the Magic Kingdom to mile 10 instead of mile 6 as it was in 2013 it was daybreak when we reached the Castle which I thought was pretty cool. In 2013 instead of the lights at EPCOT we arrived at the Magic Kingdom still in the dark and saw Main Street USA all alight and the Castle glowing in the distance. That could not be beat. It is really an unbelievable experience.

There was a very tough out and back in 2012 between miles 18-20 and this is where I struggled in 2012. I lost a minute per mile from mile 20 but still finished upright. In 2013 this was eliminated with the run through ESPN (although that seemed like it went on forever but that may have been the excessive heat).

I liked the 2013 course and will be looking forward to running it again. At this time they haven’t announced the 10K course but I believe it will be in EPCOT where all the races start.

So, I’m registered and looking forward to the four days of early wake ups (start times are 6:30, 5:30, 5:30 and 5:30), carb loading on Mickey shaped treats, trying my first Dole Whip which everyone seems to know what they are but me and meeting new friends and sharing the experience.  Logistically this needs to be a solo trip as my eldest will be in grade school and my wife and I are taking turns to participate in runDisney events next year so we can look after the boys. She will be signing up for the Princess Half Marathon in February 2014.  Don’t worry boys, Daddy will bring you some overcompensating gifts home!

I’m planning to use the same training plan I used for last year’s Goofy Challenge which is to use Hal Higdon’s Marathon Intermediate 1 plan to get me through the Philadelphia Marathon and then use Hal’s Multiple Marathons plan for the period between Philadelphia and the Dopey Challenge with an adjustment on the weekends so that my Saturday runs are at least half the Sunday run in length (see my plan here). Wish me luck.

Okay, so I’m signed up. What I now need to do is to train hard and healthily to get me to the starting line but also, and often the hardest part, is to raise the required donations for the cause I am running for. Autism Speaks is a charity near and dear to me. My niece in the UK was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and although I am not able to be there on a day to day basis to help, by raising funds and awareness I am doing what I can to help her and similar families. Over the next few months I will be raising funds for this cause.  If you would like to make a contribution I would be very appreciative. You can follow this link. Feel free to share this link if you can.

Autism Speaks

If you have any great fundraising ideas that would be great too. I’m planning a virtual 5K later this year (watch out for it) which may have a Disney theme with a bit of a twist. You have been warned!!

So, let me know if you are also signed up for any of the Walt Disney Marathon weekend races in 2014. What you are looking forward to most? What you are most apprehensive about? Let’s share this journey together.

March 2013 – month in review

March 2013 - Nike+ Summary

March 2013 – Nike+ Summary

March is the step up month in my marathon training and I clocked just over 182 miles of which 100 were indoors on a treadmill and 82 were actually outside. Yes, March brings the beginning of spring and after finally getting outdoors on March 10th for a teaser of future weather I feel we got ‘punk’d’ by Punxsutawny Phil. What the heck happened?  We got snow in the last week of March and it sent me back inside the gym again.

Not quite telling the truth

Not quite telling the truth

Anyway, as mentioned earlier, this was the month my marathon training started introducing the ‘longer’ long runs.  I had a 17, 18 and 20 miler to do and thankfully all were able to be done outside.  The 18 miler was the coldest and started off with me slipping on ice as I left my house.  Needless to say that was a very slow and decidedly steady run.  But run it I did and made it through the month.  I struggled a little with an ache in the arch of my right foot during the middle of the month and I had to cut a run short to make sure I didn’t push myself too far.  It had been nagging me for a couple of runs but I wanted to make sure I was fit for the long runs.  Thankfully all was okay.

My last long run was outside by the Delaware Canal and it happened to be on the first day of trout fishing season.  As the water level was high my progress was halted by some flooded areas so I repeated a 6 mile out and back three times as part of the run.  I ran multiple times past dozens of people sitting or standing by the banks of the canal fishing thinking to myself how can they sit there doing nothing, just waiting for something to happen?  They were probably looking at me thinking what the heck is that guy doing running past me again and again….is he lost?  They wore camouflage and I wore spandex.  Two very disparate worlds.  I struggled around mile 16 on that run and although I finally made it to mile 20 I actually was beat up.  I wasn’t using my regular energy gels and I feel that made a huge difference.  I actually for a couple of hours after.

I rotate a couple of pairs of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12’s at a time and track the mileage on each and the pair I was running in had reached 450 miles by the end of the month so I feel that the arch pain and sore foot I experienced this month may be because I pushed that particular pair too far.  It may be that the discomfort was a sign that the shoes were basically past their due date. Nevertheless I now have a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13’s to break in before the New Jersey Marathon on May 5th and another pair being delivered to keep on hand when my next pair (already at 294 miles) are ready to be retired.

March was memorable in that runDisney announced a new event for 2014.  The inaugural ‘Dopey Challenge’.  You can read about it in my post from the day it was announced.  I am so pumped by the prospect of this event that I am very close to an intervention for sure.  I have decided that I will again be running with TeamUp to raise funds for Autism Speaks.  It is a cause near and dear to me as I have a family member who has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and I feel it is the least I can do to help.  Once registered I will be posting my training plan and fundraising ideas so watch this space!!!

Alternatively you can head over to my new Facebook page which launched this month.  It is linked to this blog and will offer a forum for people to post and share along with other news and some giveaways.  Take a look, ‘Like’ it and see what you think.

Tomorrow is April 1st and is the day the registration for the 2013 Philadelphia Marathon opens up.  This is a special event for me as Philadelphia was my first marathon back in 2011 (not that that was too long ago).  This year the plan is for my wife Shari and I to register and run together.  This will be her second marathon after Walt Disney World where we ran together too.  I want to take this one easy as I will be focusing on completing Dopey standing up and uninjured.  I will be focusing on the upcoming New Jersey Marathon in May as my time goal for the year.

April also is the start of what is our ‘race’ season.  We are not competitive runners but have signed up for a number of events over the next few months to keep us in shape.  First up is the Atlantic City April Fool’s Half Marathon on April 7th.  You can see the races that I have planned on my ‘Races and Events‘ page. I hope to be able to do some race recaps on these events whenever possible.

So final thoughts.  I am hoping that the weather finally breaks and becomes what we expect spring to be (although temperatures in the low 50s and overcast would be fine on race days).  April has one more long run and then the beloved taper.  I will also be signing up for the 2013 Philadelphia Marathon and the 2014 Dopey Challenge.

On to the next adventure.

See you out there 🙂

48.6 is the new 42.4…That’s just Dopey!

In January of this year I ran the ‘Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge’ at Walt Disney World.  The challenge is the completion of the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday and the Full Marathon (26.2 miles) on the Sunday.  For good measure my wife and I also ran the Family 5K on the Friday.  That was what everyone traditionally called the unofficial ‘Dopey’ challenge.  I think the names are pretty much self explanatory.  So in addition to the 39.3 miles official distance you add another 3.1 miles to reach the 42.2 miles of the Dopey…or so we thought…

Was this a prediction for 2014?

Was this a prediction for 2014?

Last week runDisney dropped a little note into the runDisney ‘Wine and Dine’ registration email that the upcoming (2014) Walt Disney World Marathon weekend would see all new medals for the races.  I’d seen rumors rumbling around on Facebook and the blogosphere earlier this week that Disney was planning on hosting an official ‘Dopey’ challenge.  There were lots of wild guesses out there as to what would make up the Dopey.  Most thought that it would be what everyone had been unofficially doing all these years but what confused everyone was that it seemed runDisney had slipped a 10K into the Marathon weekend schedule.  Well today all those rumors were put to rest as runDisney announced the official inaugural ‘Dopey Challenge’.  This consists of 4 races on 4 days as follows:

  • Thursday January 9 – 5K (3.1 miles)
  • Friday January 10 – 10K (6.2 miles)
  • Saturday January 11 – Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
  • Sunday January 12 – Full Marathon (26.2 miles)

The Goofy Challenge earns you a Donald medal for the Half, a Mickey medal for the Full and a Goofy medal for completing both, a total of 3 medals.  Add in one more for the 5K and you walk away (slowly and with a limp probably) with 4 medals.  runDisney announced that by completing the Dopey Challenge you get the 5K medal, a Minnie themed medal for the 10K as well as the Donald, Mickey and Goofy and finally for completing all races you earn a new ‘Dopey’ medal.  That’s 6, count them, 6 medals.  Bling, bling, bling, bling, bling, bling (although the 5K is usually a rubber medallion so deduct a bling…it’s up to you).  That’s some serious hardware.  In addition to walking funny after all this mileage you’ll probably be stooped over from the weight around you neck 🙂

So, what’s the plan?  Am I in?  You bet.  Wouldn’t miss this.  A friend suggested I need an intervention.  Maybe, but it will have to wait until January 13, 2014!!!

Thanks to runDisney I now have 2 problems:

  1. My blog is called Philly2Goofy (oops, didn’t see this coming)
  2. I’m going to need a bigger car for my new distance magnet (see below)

February 2013 – month in review

February 2013 - Nike+ Summary

February 2013 – Nike+ Summary

February is the month of my birthday, Valentine’s Day and Groundhog Day, or the month I became a hamster…sort of…well, that’s how it felt.

Too much time on the 'mill?

Too much time on the ‘mill?

I logged 133 miles this month however it was all inside on the treadmill (as much as 16 miles at a time).  It was around this time last year that I joined the local Planet Fitness.  I had been training outdoors in the cold weather and I would come in from my runs with sore feet (running shoes are designed to let heat out but not keep it in) and tingling fingers from the cold.  I was about to buy a warm pair of gloves for about $40 when my Wife suggested I look at joining the gym for the winter.  It was only $10 a month so I had nothing to lose.  I said I would use it for the winter and probably drop the membership when the weather turned nice.  It would be less than the cost of the gloves for when I needed to use it.  Well winter turned into spring and then summer.  The treadmill was a life saver when the temperatures were over 100 or it was raining on the days I needed to get my training runs in.   However I mostly run outside when the temperatures and conditions permit.

I had my warm clothes laid out ready to go a few times but ended up putting them back.  There were a couple of times I almost got outside this month.  As I run running early in the morning I set my clothes out the night before so not to disturb everyone in the house.  I follow the weather forecast and almost always err on the conservative forecasts.  My Wife calls me a weather pessimist…I guess that must be the English in me.  I only recently stopped carrying an umbrella everywhere in my laptop bag.

This morning was my last chance this month to run outdoors.  I have a route in my neighborhood which I run and it also has some nice hills.  Well, it wasn’t until I set foot outdoors that I realized the weather was warm enough to run outside but I wasn’t wearing a long sleeve T and I didn’t have time to head back in for a wardrobe change.  They say it takes 28 days to have a habit stick.  Well, today was the 28th day of the month and I guess I just got used to getting up and driving to the gym.  Not that it’s a bad habit but still…

I umm’d and aah’d many times this month on whether to run indoors or out.  I run very early in the mornings.  I get up between 4.30-5.00 a.m. on weekdays so I can get a run in before work.  At the weekends I am up between 5.00-6.00am to get the run in before the family activities start and also so that I can look after the boys when Shari wants to go out and run which leaves me as the one to run in the dark and colder temperatures.  One recent Saturday night I was planning a 14 miler on the treadmill and someone sent me this funny post on Facebook.  It seems to sum up my mood this month.

Ellen Degeneres quote

Ellen Degeneres quote

My big discovery this month was the podcast app on my iPhone.  I don’t listen to music when I run outside and use it only on the treadmill.  I had listened to the same songs again and again on my iPod Shuffle that I found myself constantly flipping forward to find a song I wanted to actually hear.  If it hadn’t been for the ‘Mickey Miles Podcast‘ (great for the runDisney fans), NPR’s ‘Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me’ and Tom and Ray from NPR’s ‘Car Talk’, I would probably have lost my mind.  Nothing like a good laugh out loud on a treadmill to relieve the mood (although it is not always easy to keep my balance).

Spring is around the corner.  We move the clocks forward in a couple of weeks and the days are getting longer.  No excuses.  I’m heading outdoors.  Just try and stop me.

I’m taking the lead from the famous groundhog ‘Punxsutawney Phil’.  This year he came out of his burrow on Groundhog Day and didn’t see his shadow.  According to folklore this means we are going to have an early spring.  Not sure how reliable he is but I’m good with his prediction. 🙂

Oh, by the way, I did end up buying the gloves anyway…

2013 Walt Disney World Marathon recap – Part 3 – Full Marathon (Goofy Challenge Day Two)

Sunday January 13th

So yesterday evening runDisney issued a heat advisory warning due to the high temperatures expected for the Marathon.  On Facebook I saw a post saying that the local hospitals had called in extra staff as a precaution for anticipated increase in volume of patients…we had been drinking fluids frequently during the previous couple of days just to be safely hydrated.

The alarm went off this morning at 2:30am…woo hoo…an extra 30 minutes of sleep from the day before.  Actually I had slept really soundly last night as I was so tired.  I already had a 5K and a Half Marathon plus two theme parks done, only a Marathon to go.

Today was a big day for my wife Shari.  It was going to be her first Full Marathon.  I was excited for her as much as she was nervous for herself.  I’ve been there.  Today I had a different set of nerves.  I have finished three marathons before but I hadn’t done anything as crazy as the Goofy Challenge before and I had a lot of people depending on me to finish not to mention I had planned my eating of treats out for the next two days and I needed to burn some calories to make up for it 😉

We both got ready in silence so as not to wake Rina and the boys in the next room.  It was eerie as we were probably both a bag of nerves.  We headed down to the lobby of the hotel where we were meeting our friend Beth who was also running the Full.  Having a passenger with us as we were driving to EPCOT and having someone to talk to all the way through to the start line is the best distraction we could have.  It really helped relax us before the start.  In future I will make sure to wake my friends in the early hours before I head to any race just for company (although I probably won’t have many friends left after that).

Like yesterday I got the directions right but unlike yesterday the volunteer in the car park directed us to the far end of the far right parking lot which led to a decent walk just to get to the bag check area.  Where was the monorail or a Fast Pass when you need it?  Either way, it got the muscles warmed up a bit.   Unlike yesterday I made sure we went straight through the bag check and met up again on the other side.  I didn’t want to get stuck in the human traffic jam that happened in the Half Marathon yesterday.  You don’t want additional stress just trying to get to your corral.  It was fine today.  Shari, Beth and I walked slowly and carefully to our corral.  It was dark in spots and some people did trip up on the way to the start line (not good).  We were all in corral ‘B’ and were there early enough for the pre-race stuff.  We heard interviews and advice from Jeff Galloway (I’m a Galloway propenent), Frank Shorter, Joey Fatone, Bart Yasso and Bill Rodgers.  We sat in the corral for a while watching the video screens and I realized this was probably one of the few times during the weekend when I wasn’t on my feet.  And before you knew it we were ready to go.  I gave Shari a good luck kiss and off we went.

Ready to go

Ready to go

It was cool at the start but we knew that it was going to get warmer.  We took advantage of the early water stops and the first few miles seemed to go by pretty fast.  We didn’t stop for the Pirates of the Caribbean today as I had promised Shari we would do many of the Princess photo ops when we got to the Magic Kingdom.  We were obviously drinking enough over the last few days as we had to stop within the first couple of miles to use the port-a-potties again (more on that later!).

We made it

We made it

As we approached the entrance to the Magic Kingdom transportation center we could see the Speedway on our left.  Shari noticed the silhouette of Mater and I also noticed Lightening McQueen.  I was really looking forward to that part of the course.  As you get closer to the park and see the Contemporary Resort you could feel the excitement building.  It was nice to have someone to share it with who wasn’t a complete stranger.  There is a small underpass as you approach the park.  I overheard a fellow Goofy runner say that they must have made the uphill part steeper over night.  Ha!

Once we entered the park it was pictures galore.  We stopped a couple of times on Main Street USA, we stopped in Tomorrow Land to meet Buzz Lightyear and then stopped for photos with every Disney Princess you could imagine.  Shari had her pose down pat by the time we got to the Castle.  Shari was on such a high at this stage that she wanted to do her usual ‘jump’ shot.  I had to remind here that we had another 20 miles to use those knees and that we should wait until we had our medals.  She did thank me later.  Finally we got our photo together in front of the Castle.  Priceless.

After Magic Kingdom we headed over to the Speedway just around mile 8.  We had still been drinking all the way but the sun was now up and warming all the runners.  Little did I know that this would be the last port-a-potty break of the run. Wow.   As you enter the Speedway there was a steep drop into the circuit.  Steep was an understatement….holy moley…glad it wasn’t uphill.  The Speedway was set up like a classic car show and right at the halfway point we got to take pictures with Lightening McQueen, Mater and my fellow Brit Finn McMissile.  Nice.

After the Speedway we entered the long stretch past the water treatment plant on the way to Animal Kingdom.  As you run you cannot help but notice the smell…its very un-Disney.  Also as it was heating up it didn’t make you feel that much better.  It was around here, miles 10-12, that my foot which I had tweaked running into EPCOT in yesterday’s Half Marathon started to hurt.  I had never had to stop before in a race but I had to stop a couple of times over that stretch to take my shoe off and massage my foot.  I use speedlaces which are elastic and allow room for feet to maneuver but I just couldn’t get my right shoe to feel good.   Shari advised me to stop for some Tylenol at the medical tent but I didn’t want to try something new during a race having never taken medicine before in a race.  We both stopped to take advantage of the BioFreeze.  Big tip – look for the volunteers with towels at the med tents to wipe your hands.  We saw plenty of people later in the race with BioFreeze hands who inadvertently wiped sweat away from their eyes.  You can only imagine how that feels.  OUCH.

We finally made it to the Animal Kingdom.  It was nice to have some shade as the temperatures were continually rising.  I loved the fact that a Disney employee was telling us when and where to smile as we ran through park for the photographers.   We got plenty of cool shots with Minnie, Daisy, Mickey and Pluto.   I found out from reading someone’s post on Facebook that they stopped to take a ride on Expedition Everest and grabbed a soda to cool themselves off before continuing and finishing the Marathon.  I told Shari this after the race and she was like “We could have done that?”  I also saw someone post their GPS route from the ride.  LOL.  Getting out of Animal Kingdom was pretty much a walk.  It’s a very narrow walkway and we got stuck behind a 5 hour pace group (yes, we had really stopped so many times).  Once free of that we headed out on the stretch to ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The heat was on now as we made our way to the ESPN.  We were grabbing extra water at the water stops and pouring it over our heads.  I’d never had to do this in a race or in training before.  It had been a while since I had a bathroom break but as I was still able to sweat I knew I had to be somewhat hydrated.  I heard after the race that over 4,500 people either dropped out or were pulled off the course because of the conditions.  I wasn’t surprised.  Shari was doing well.  She was hanging on and we were still together.  The ESPN zone seemed to go on FOREVER.  Seriously, there were left turns and right turns and it was just hot.  There was a little shade in places but you had to keep going.  I stopped again to massage my foot and caught up with Shari just before we entered the running track.  Wow, was that bouncy?  Not sure at 19 miles I benefited from the soft surface.  I don’t think it did my knee any favors.  We then entered the baseball stadium.  Most folks said they liked the change in texture under their feet (it was sandy/grit) but after a few thousand people had run over the inside track it was far from even.  Somehow we missed the wet sponges they had passed out at the first water station in ESPN.  That was a shame.     As we exited ESPN the heat began to hit again and we did have to walk for a minute or so.

After ESPN we reached what was to be the high point.  The 20th mile celebration.  I will be honest and say that I was expecting much more.  Although a photo op with Mickey is never a bad thing.  The best part about this was that we seemed to catch our breath and recapture some of our energy along this section.  Mile 20 last year was where I began to struggle and it was way cooler than this year.  As we passed the 20 mile marker Shari hadn’t realized that we had passed the ‘Spectacular’.  From what I have read on line she wasn’t the only one.

Mile 20 with Mickey, Minnie and Pluto

Mile 20 with Mickey, Minnie and Pluto

Next up Hollywood Studios.  It seemed to go pretty fast.  I guess we had our second wind.  Before you knew it we were passing over the timing mat at 23 miles.  I turned to Shari at this point and said its only a 5K left.  She looked at me and started to cry.  The only thing I could say was to be careful not to cry too much as she needed to retain fluids in this heat….romantic, huh?

Just the Boardwalk to run and then back into EPCOT.  It was hot.  I was tired.  I didn’t want to let Shari down.  She was doing great and I could see she was getting very emotional at this time.  As we turned into England (nice) in the World Showcase and turned right through the countries the realization began to sink in that we were pretty much done.  Shari had run her first Marathon and I was completing the Goofy Challenge.  As we reached the front of the park and passed by Spaceship Earth I made sure everyone knew that Shari was completing her first Marathon and ensuring that they cheered her on to the finish.  We stopped at mile 26 for a photo and I saw the choir.   I had been waiting for this moment since Saturday morning’s fireworks at the start of the Half Marathon.

The home stretch back in EPCOT

26 miles. We made it.

We saw the finish line and ran hand in hand together.  We stopped just short of the finish line for just one more photo op with Minnie and with Goofy.   As I was having my photo with Goofy, Shari turned and headed to the finish line and finished 2 seconds ahead of me….she had to beat me, right?  We finished in 5:28.  Nowhere near my 3:59 in Philadelphia 8 weeks prior but much more fun and rewarding.  I ran the whole distance with my wife and best friend.  Awesome.

The end of a very enjoyable 39.3 miles

First stop after receiving our medals….self treatment.  Ice had never felt so good.  We sat there for 20 or 30 minutes.  It was a sense of relief.  Shari was texting with Rina and her parents and I was chatting with the same guy from NJ I had met in self treatment yesterday.  We were done.   We made it over to the Goofy tent to get my medal and headed out to meet up with our friend Beth who had finished about 20 minutes ahead of us.

The bling (and the ice)

Then we had the very long walk across the parking lot to retrieve our car.  Funny, I think the walk helped actually.  Other than being tired and a little sore I felt better than when I ran my first marathon back in 2011 and I had just run 39.3 (or 42.4 but who’s counting).  I guess all the training paid off.

Now back to the hotel…we had two days at the Magic Kingdom left to enjoy 🙂

Thanks for sticking with this for so long.  If you made it to the end of this post you can probably feel you read a Goofy Challenge!

2013 Walt Disney World Marathon recap – Part 2 – Half Marathon (Goofy Challenge Day One)

Saturday January 12th

Beep…Beep…Beep…yup, that was the sound at 2am (not that I hadn’t woken up just before my alarm to make sure I didn’t miss the alarm).

Having set out all my gear and pinned my Goofy bib to my race shirt the night before I got myself up and prepared. There is nothing like getting up at 2am and putting on sunscreen, eating a Power Bar and drinking Powerade Zero to start your day. It was an extra early start today as I was going to the race this morning with my sister in law Rina who was running her very first Half Marathon. I did the gentlemanly thing and got up earlier so she could have an extra 30 minutes sleep and get out of the bathroom so she had time to get ready. Anyway, we were out the door and headed to the car 3:15 (a little earlier than planned).

It was a little foggy as we got closer to the park but at least I didn’t miss the exit today. We got there about 3:45 in a good parking spot not too far from the start line entry and immediately got in lines for the port-a-potties (as you do), took a few pictures and headed to bag check. Once through we again hit the bathrooms just as they started calling the runners to the corrals.

Rina and I arriving at the Half Marathon staging area.

Rina and I arriving at the Half Marathon staging area.

Wow….it took forever or at least it seemed like that to get to the corrals. I don’t remember it being as busy last year although I remember the longish walk to the start line. We just couldn’t get beyond the bag check/bathroom area for so long. It was funny though as we were listening to everyone’s conversation of past Disney races or talking about their first race nerves. We overheard a guy talking about preparing for the Goofy Challenge and giving advice to a fellow runner doing his first Goofy. I listened as he advised that after the race he went back to his hotel room, took and ice bath and then sat with his legs up to the wall at a 90 degree angle to rid him of lactic acid. Then he planned to rest until 4pm and have an early dinner….you mean you are not supposed to head straight out to Hollywood Studios after the race? Umm…

As we walked along to the corrals Rina and I chatted until we had to split into our respective corrals. Luckily she met up with some other first timers and I left her in their care. So much for us having to be in the corrals by 5am…I didn’t make it there until 5.20am just as they sang the National Anthem. I jumped into the corral and waiting for corral B to be called to the start line. I recognized Lee Hoedl (the guy who makes those awesome videos) and we took a quick picture together. I had made a conscious decision to enjoy myself this weekend so I took my iPhone with me and was ready to take the run easy and stop and take pictures. I did take a few pictures during the Marathon last year but I was still looking at a time as that had been my second marathon. As I was doing the Goofy for charity this year I decided to just enjoy myself and make sure I made it to the finish line on Sunday.

The fireworks went off and we made our way across the start line. Within the first 100 yards or so it was “Uh oh…hello right knee. Thanks for turning up”. Oh boy…only 39.2 miles to go! I went easy, this was not a day to PR anyway so may as well make it as enjoyable as possible.

Last year during the marathon we ran through the Magic Kingdom around mile 10 and it was light by that time. This year the Half Marathon and Full Marathon followed the same course through the Magic Kingdom and so we hit the Magic Kingdom around mile 6. I have to admit that the first few miles seemed to go really fast. Perhaps it was the anticipation of entering the Magic Kingdom. I made sure to take photos with Captain Jack Sparrow and Jack Skellington as these are some of Micah’s favorite characters.

I don’t know how to describe the feeling of running up Main Street USA with all the lights and seeing Cinderella Castle all aglow without telling you you have to be there for yourself. It’s magical when you visit the park but it is even more special and I would say emotional while you are running there as the adrenaline and excitement of entering the park is so different from a regular visit (no fiddling with tickets, going through security or pushing a stroller). The noise of the crowd contributes to the whole experience. Last year I ran through the park and stopped for a picture in front of the castle. This year I made sure to stop and take pictures and soak up the atmosphere. Truly magical.

After running through the Magic Kingdom the course takes you back to EPCOT. There is not too much to see once you leave the Magic Kingdom and it does get a bit narrow along the course in places. I made sure I got my photo with Mary Poppins this year. I didn’t have my camera last year and this was one photo I was sorry to have missed in 2012. The runDisney folks do a great job in keeping you entertained with music and character stops. I made sure that I saw the TeamUp cheering squad just after mile 7.

Step in time, step in time

Step in time, step in time

The sun was coming up and we all followed the herd up the overhead ramps on our way back into EPCOT. With very few character stops on the way back I could start to settle into a consistent mile pace. Around mile 10 I finally had to stop at a med tent and enjoy some of the complimentary BioFreeze which finally began to work its magic as I approached the 11 mile mark. Once all was working right again (or at least I couldn’t feel it wasn’t working right) I picked up the pace. I stopped one more time to take a picture with Phineus and Ferb before high tailing it into EPCOT. My legs felt fine so I thought I could run in….which I did only to feel something tweak in my right foot. I made it across the finish line and received my Donald medal and taking advice from some of the blogs I had read, headed over to the self-treatment area to apply some ice to all the achy bits for 20-30 minutes as I waited to meet up with my sister-in-law Rina.

Aaaaaahh. That feels so good.

Aaaaaahh. That feels so good.

Once through the bag check I sat on my runDisney mylar blanket and used my foam roller stick on my legs, ate and drank and just chilled out in the shade of the tent and followed Rina’s progress on Facebook. When Rina came through the bag check she was clearly very emotional having completed her first Half Marathon. She looked so happy (and relieved) and I was so proud of her. Once we both calmed down a bit we headed back to the hotel to shower and change and then we all set off for Hollywood Studios.

At Hollywood Studios we had a character dine booked at Hollywood & Vine. It was with the Disney Junior characters which my boys both loved. We ate there after the Half last year and I remember it was a great place to re-carb. I think I ate my body weight in mac and cheese. It was so tasty although I made sure to leave room for dessert (two portions). This gluttony probably is the reason I fell asleep during the Handy Manny section of the Disney Junior show… the 2am wake up probably also helped.

We chose Hollywood Studios as our Saturday park as we knew we would be hitting the parks but this had an earlier closing time than the others so we tried to plan appropriately. We were still there at the close of the park too. I knew I had to eat a little before heading to bed but didn’t want another huge meal after my lunch adventures so we ended up grabbing some bakery items including the giant Mickey peanut butter cookie you see in the picture below…hey, doing the Goofy Challenge any carbs are good carbs. Before we left the park for the night Shari had been shopping and had bought a completely different outfit to run in for tomorrow’s Full Marathon. Either way tomorrow would be an exciting day for all of us.

I got all my race gear ready for tomorrow’s marathon. Some random guy (who I would like to thank) handed me a strip of ring reinforcers to put on my bib. I hadn’t seen or used them since university and it had not crossed my mind that someone would think about handing them out but it was great as we had to re-use the Goofy bib on consecutive days. A life saver for sure. A quick load of laundry after the half and I had my outfit for the morning. I cannot believe I packed for cool weather before I came to Florida. What a waste of luggage space 😉

Shari told me that once my head hit the pillow that night (probably sometime around 10pm) I was out like a light. Never ever happens to me but I’ll take it when I need it.

2013 Walt Disney World Marathon recap – Part 1 – Disney Family 5K

In 2012 I ran the Walt Disney World Marathon.  I was a fairly new runner and it was my second marathon.  My wife also ran her first Half Marathon during the 2012 marathon weekend and we had such a great time I really wanted to go back again.  This year I signed up to run the Goofy Challenge and raise funds for Autism Speaks.   As I had signed up for the Goofy my wife Shari decided that she would take on her first Full Marathon and my sister-in-law Rina (who last year came to help and support) signed up to run her first Half Marathon.  A great weekend of firsts was ahead of us.

Friday January 11th

It has been a long time coming (we signed up before general registration opened) but we finally made it to the first part of our Marathon Weekend.  The alarm clock went off at 4am and we made our way to EPCOT for the Disney Family 5K.  Me and my brilliant sense of direction and lack of following instructions missed our exit and had to do a turn around to get to the starting line but better today than the big race days.

We still got there early enough, parked the car and got into our costumes.  Shari was Cinderella and I was Prince Charming (in spandex).  We parked next to a family dressed as the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and their little girl was dressed as Alice.  Glad to know that everyone was getting into the spirit of the weekend.   We made our way to our Corral (‘A’) and waiting for the fireworks.  They still get me every time.  This was my second official Disney race (I ran the Marathon last year) and I think there is nothing better than fireworks to start a race.

The race was so much fun.  We ran slowly at first as I was concerned about my right knee but then we just set into a regular pace.  Shari and I had so much fun spotting other people’s costumes and talking to the folks running alongside us.  Once we entered EPCOT we made sure to stop and take pictures with each character we met.  We didn’t care about the time.  We even waited in line when Goofy had to ‘disappear’ for a few minutes.   I took every opportunity to take a photo with Goofy this weekend.  In the last mile bumped into Sid Busch who runs the Disney Marathon Weekend page on Facebook.  I recognized him from his ‘Buzz Lightyear’ costume (an unexpected but nice surprise).

The funniest part of the race was that people were stopping Shari and I and asking to take pictures with us.   It was just so much fun.  We quickly learned to take pictures for other people so they would take pictures of us.  We laughed so much it just relaxed us and set us in a great mood for the rest of the marathon weekend.

After a quick shower we all headed out to EPCOT for the rest of the day.  The parks weren’t too crowded which was nice so we got to do all the rides, attractions and see all the countries we wanted.  We actually hit all the countries in the World Showcase this year which was great for the boys.   We then met up with the TeamUp (Autism Speaks) team for a pre-race pasta dinner and stayed for the fireworks before heading off to bed for as much sleep would be possible before the 2am alarm on Saturday morning.
